Christmas cards

I have been on a stamping hiatus for quite a while. My hobbies seem to have changed as happens to many. But this lovely stamp has never had the kiss of ink and I thought I would like to make some cards with it. Here are a couple of quick pics of the cards that I made using the Holly stamp from the Stampsmith. Have a wonderful Christmas.

Lucy Vacation Book

I submitted this ages ago to Stampington and now that it has been returned, thought I would share it with you. This book uses images from the Stampsmith Lucy plate and I thought it would be fun to see if I could turn them into a story.

Hope you enjoyed the trip.

The images were stamped on glossy cardstock, and coloured with water based markers applied by paintbrush.

These cards are made with images from the new Oxford Impressions Christmas plate Sleigh Bells. This card expresses my wish for peace this Christmas.

This quote seems made for these boys.

This card makes use of the masking technique. The quote is from the St. Nicholas collection.

I was so happy to see this formerly retired image back in this collection. She is one of my favourites. The snowflake was cut on my KNK electronic die cutter.

Dress form christmas card

I had fun combining this image from the Oxford Impressions Dress Forms and Corsetry plate with the Christmas tree from the Sleigh Bells plate. I drew the lights on the form and coloured the whole thing with Copic markers and air brush.

Corset cards

I did this series of cards using images from Oxford Impressions' new plate, Dress Forms and Corsetry. These are kind of unusual for me as I am not a pink person generally but liked the colour for these images. The background were all done doing a kind of master sheet, randomly stamped with various images from the plate, using distress inks.

Continuing with The Deep plate from Oxford Impressions, I used actual reef photos and stamped images to create this undersea world.

I used amber crystals for the eyes on the octopus.

The seahorse also has a crystal eye. The sea creature images were stamped on glossy cardstock and coloured with waterbased and pigment markers.

I really enjoyed using my photos with the images. Regardless of how exotic the stamped images are, the reef is even more spectacular. I did have to soften the pictures so that the stamped images were not lost.

Deep Sea Voyage

Suzanne at Oxford Impressions has been doing plates that are steampunk in feel. These cards are done using images from The Deep plate, based on Jules Verne type sea images. The gentleman is from the Steampunk Elements plate. My version of a diving bell was done using my Klik N Kut to cut out the basic shape from cardstock. I covered it with metal tape and added dimension using Ten Seconds Studios metal tools and acrylic paint. The background was done with Ranger Colour Washes. The fish were stamped on cardstock, coloured with Copic markers and then embossed with clear embossing powder. I used prismacolour pencils for the sea weeds and corals.

Taking a cue from the ladies that use Stampscape stamped images in conjunction with photos, the diver was stamped onto a photo from a recent snorkelling trip. The porthole was cut and embossed with my Wizard and circular dies. I used the copic airbrush to create the wood look. Pencil crayon defines the individual boards.

80th birthday card

A few months ago, Ileana Russell, I Scrap Designs ,shared this great cutter file. I just knew it would be perfect for my dad's 80th birthday. It was a little hard to photograph, because I used mirror card to get the chrome look. It tends to either reflect the light everywhere or show the photographer in the pic. Oh well, I think you get the idea anyways.

This was cut with my KNK cutter, using black cardstock, mirror card and a cream cardstock that I antiqued with distress inks. I used my Scor-it to do the embossing on the mirror card. It was a big hit at my dad's party.

3rd birthday card

It's hard to believe that my granddaughter is now three. She still loves Elmo but has also developed an interest in the princesses and fairies. So this year's card is more girly than the previous ones. She is cut out of cardstock using my KNK cutter and an EPS image from Brands of the World. I shaded with chalks to give dimension and added glitter to the wings. The word phrases are cut from vinyl.

Thursday was a fun day. I returned home to find the latest Somerset Studios magazine in my mailbox, as they had published 2 of my cards from the call for art for Alice in Wonderland. I had taken pictures before submitting them and would like to share them here and to mention that the stamps are from Oxford Impressions, as the stamp credits are missing in the magazine writeup. Of course, their photography is much better than mine and they staged them really nicely, but you get the idea.

This card uses images from the Bonbon plate and background text from the China Dolls plate from Oxford Impressions. It's my take on the coveted item, lovingly torn out and the page saved from the catalogue. For boys, I think it used to be bicycles and wagons, and in my imagination, the girls would have loved the dolls and the tea sets.

This card uses a wonderful image from the Stampsmith. The image is coloured with waterbased markers, used as paint. The heart was cut with a cuttlebug die in my Wizard. The word phrase is done with a dymo label maker. Does Cupid have you in sight?

I like the simplicity of this. The decorative paper pulls this all together very well. The stamped image is coloured with waterbased markers applied by paintbrush.
The images are all Oxford Impressions.

This card is coloured with both Copic markers and the airbrush and overstamped with distress inks. The hearts are made on my KNK electronic diecutter, using a file by Mary. All stamps are Oxford Impressions.

Simply Alice

Often I find that some of the most effective cards can be some of the simpler ones to do. This classic Alice image from Oxford Impressions is stamped with Memento black ink on cardstock from the Paper Temptress and coloured with Copic Markers. The phrase is a green core black cardstock strip, run through a dymo label maker and sanded. The background layer is a scrapbooking paper. I enjoyed doing the purple caterpillar and this paper matches well and pulls it all together.

Winter cards

Due to an unforseen postal delay, I didn't receive the St. Nicholas plate of stamps from Suzanne at Oxford Impressions until after Christmas. So I decided to make winter cards, rather than holiday ones. For this card, I used gold mirror card, embossed with my Wizard using a cuttlebug folder, and coloured with Ranger alcohol inks. I think the effect looks like pierced metal. I used images from the St.Nicholas and Winter Snow plates.

The bird was stamped with Memento black on card from the Paper Temptress and coloured and airbrushed with Copic markers. I kept the card fairly simple, using layers to accent the colours in the image.

I don't normally do cute, it's just not my style. That said, I am having great fun doing cards for my granddaughter. Given she is under 3, cute it has to be. I also enjoy using my cutter for cards for her. This card features her favourite red guy, and no, it's not Santa. The tree is a KNK file shared on Sandy's blog here , done by Bryan and Cara. The font for the greeting is hiccups.

More Madonna Images

Continuing with the various art representations of the Madonna and child images, these cards are done with stamps from Oxford Impressions which are currently unavailable. I used alcohol inks on gold mirror cardstock which had been embossed with a cuttlebug folder for the Madonna and children image. The Silent Night word stamp from Wordsworth on the first card is embossed with gold detail embossing powder. All other background stamps are Oxford Impressions.

These images are from the Blessed Are plate of stamps from the Stampsmith. I am fascinated by the different art interpretations of the Madonna and child image and in the case of the first picture, of Joseph. These stamps make wonderful cards for friends of faith. All are stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock, and coloured with water based markers used as paint. The metallic background for the blue madonna was done using a gold paper, run through a cuttlebug folder and coloured with alcohol inks. I like to keep these fairly simple, with few embellishments to make the main image pop. It also makes them easier to mail.

Thanks card

It's always a bit more difficult to design a card that is for many individuals, both male and female. Fortunately the thanks card was for people who assisted in a Christmas project so I could use holiday colours. The word is done on my KNK digital die cutter using an erasable pen, so that I could emboss the image with gold detail embossing powder. I used a stardust pen to fill in the letters. The thanks phrase and the white card base are edged with gold brilliance ink. The label layers are gold and silver, as the background paper has gold and silver glitter in it. Then came the fun of trying to photograph it. Metal papers are notorious for causing reflections that are distracting, but hopefully the picture gives you a good idea of the effect.

I haven't been feeling very creative lately, as I have had a bad cold that morphed into a sinus infection. This isn't perfect ( I'm not showing anyone the back lol) but I was pleased in general with the overall effect, and that my muse has decided to return and play. This polymer clay necklace is done in Christi Friesen style. I chose not to seal the poinsettias to maintain the more organic look.

This shows the flowers in a little more detail. I used Premo polymer clay. The swarovski off white pearls get this lovely golden colour when baked in the clay.

Birthday cards

Sometimes the simpler cards can be quite effective. These cards use Spellbinders dies for their design elements. I used the renaissance heart border, as well as the ovals and scalloped ovals. The edges are accented with teal chalk ink and distress inks. The monogram letters were cut on my KNK digital cutter, using a file from Ginny's Happy Cuts, available at Paperthreads. The embossed line edge on the D card was done using the Scor-it.

Halloween cards

This card uses an image from Oxford Impressions and a cutter file from Ileana Russell, I Scrap Designs, for the phrase. I thought it was a great one for this image and made for a fun card. It is coloured and airbrushed with Copic markers.

This is a simple card using images from Oxford Impressions, that just sets a mood or tone for Halloween. Distress inks were used to colour this card.

This is my take on a more ghoulish card. The stamps are all Oxford Impressions. I remember reading a bunch of Poe's short stories as a teen and thinking that he had a very strange mind. But I still remember some of them, even these many years later. Distress inks and acrylic paints were used to colour this card.

All the images on this card are from Oxford Impressions as well. It is coloured with distress inks and copic markers.

Haunted Halloween

Suzanne at Oxford Impressions has a new plate of Halloween images called Haunted. These images work well together and with the images on her other two Halloween plates called Trick or Treat and Wicked.

These images are stamped with Memento black on Heavenly White cardstock, from the Paper Temptress, masking as needed. The children are coloured with Copics markers and the background is airbrushed with the Copics. The word phrase is computer generated using the Blackletter font, while Beware is stamped.

The girl and pumpkin are stamped with Memento black on Heavenly White cardstock and coloured with Copic markers. The wings are made with hot glue in a Krafty Lady mold from After Midnight stamps. These are mounted onto a gold framed specialty paper window, topped with gold embossed lace on black cardstock. This is mounted on a cuttlebugged green card, accented with Brilliance gold, mounted onto orange card, then a black base.

My husband says this card reminds him of the movie Beetlejuice. The girl is stamped on Heavenly White cardstock, with Memento black and coloured with Copics. The background was made with various distress inks, overstamped with Memento inks.

New pic of card

I was originally going to pull the previous post but thought it might be better to leave it, to illustrate a mistake I made. I got a little too cute with the card and just caused confusion. In the previous version I mixed the Bette image with the Joan Crawford quote, as a kind of ironic statement, but just ended up with a card that didn't make a lot of sense. Lesson learned. I also gave her back her blue eyes.

Star card

For those of us who enjoy the hunt for new craft supplies, I thought this might be a fun card. Both the Betty Davis image and Joan Crawford quote are from the Stampsmith. Rumour has it that they were not the best of friends, so I don't think they would really have quoted one another, but since this is my card, I get to ignore that detail. I also chose to give Bette brown eyes instead of blue in my card universe. lol She is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock, and coloured with water based markers and chalks. The image is edged with vintage photo distress ink. The phrase is stamped on ivory card, overstamped with a small flourish in teal and grey and mounted with other papers to make a paper ribbon. The image and phrase are mounted onto black cardstock, then decorative paper then onto black and a card base.

Bling

The current Gingersnaps Creations challenge is to use bling. This Stampsmith image, appropriately named Bling, fits the bill to a tee. She is stamped in Memories black on glossy cardstock, coloured with waterbased markers applied by paintbrush and with chalks. She is mounted on a navy layer, then a white panel coloured with Brilliance inks, direct to paper, then onto a mirrored card layer and finally onto a navy card base. The word phrase is from the Stampsmith as well. I had to play a bit with the camera angle to show the sparkle of the crystal embellishments and the effect of the mirror card.

Pirate Prince

Estelle at the Stampsmith and Gingersnap Creations are teamed up this month, featuring movie stars and with the chance to win a stamp by the Stampsmith on the Gingersnap blog. This card uses the Stampsmith's image of Errol Flynn, the original swashbuckler prince. He is stamped in Memories black on glossy cardstock, and coloured with waterbased markers applied with a paint brush. He is mounted on black card. This is layered onto a scrapbooking paper with a nautical theme, which was aged with distress inks, teal splatter and stamped compass in grey in bottom corner. The pirate quote was computer generated on paper, and distressed. The prince quote is printed onto gold vellum and embossed with detail powder.
What a smile he had!

America's Sweetheart

I really like some of the new pendant dies from Spellbinders and felt that the renaissance heart one would be perfect for this Stampsmith image of Shirley Temple. She is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock and coloured with watercolour markers, used as paint. I cut out 8 of the hearts from the incandescant white paper from the Paper Temptress, airbrushed them with a Copic marker, then applied them to the central pendant. This is mounted on a green parchment panel with dimensionals. I cut the border out of the same incandescant paper, airbrushed it and applied it to the base which was cut with the border. The words were done with vellum in a dymo label maker and accented with Copic marker. The edges are inked to add depth.

Flower card

This card was done using my KNK electronic die cut machine and a lovely file from Ginny's Happy Cuts at Paperthreads. I have tried to have the photo show the lovely sheen on the white incandescent paper from the Paper Temptress. The flowers are accented with glimmer chalks and the papers distressed a bit with the splatter stamp from SU , using Brilliance inks in gold and sky blue. The edges are inked with Frescoes blue grotto and Antiquities Topiary.

Road Trip

I really like this image from the Lucy plate from the Stampsmith. I'm sure most of us have memories of similar car trips, with special friends or family. The image is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock and coloured with watercolour markers, applied with a paint brush. The travel scrapbooking paper is aged with vintage photo and walnut stain. The edges of all layers are antiqued with Ranger distress inks in walnut stain, vintage photo and black soot. The word phrases were cut on my Klik N Kut electronic die cutter.

A vibrant wedding card

Recently I was invited to a Hindu wedding and needed to make a special card. As their traditional wedding colours are gold and red, this made for a much more vibrant colour combination than is normally used for a wedding card.

I used cardstocks from the Paper Temptress' Christmas collection for this. The phrases were done using an erasable pen in my KNK electronic die cutter, and embossed with gold detail powder. The word layer and the gold one were done using my Wizard and Spellbinders Labels 4. I airbrushed them with Copic marker R27. Aged Mahogany distress ink was used to edge the card. The roses were cut on my KNK using a really interesting paper called red plastic that cut really well and has a kind of suede like texture. I used Charcoal Pallette ink on the edges of the petals for extra definition. The file for the roses is by Jennie Bean Crafts and is available from Paperthreads. I had great fun doing this non-traditional wedding card and love the rich feel of it.

3 Versions

These cards show how different the same image (in this case, a Marilyn image from the Stampsmith) can be, depending on the colouring and the presentation of the card. All were stamped with Memories black ink on glossy cardstock. This one has parts of the image coloured with waterbased markers used as paint and with chalks. It is mounted on a scrapbooking paper, a black cardstock layer, then on a purple card base, edged in black ink. The words are done with a dymo label maker (which is unfortunately reflecting the light . It really is smoother than it appears).

This image could have been considered a mistake. It was the first image stamped and the black areas of the dress were a little blotchy. By colouring those areas with marker applied by paintbrush, the dress appears to have a lace top. So before you pitch an imperfect image, play with it and see if colouring it brings a new dimension to it.

This image is very striking on its own and works well in black and white, with small shots of colour. The only areas coloured in the stamped image are the lips and I coloured them lightly. This one is mounted on white, then black with white embossed swirls, then burgundy and onto an off white card.

Lucy birthday card

This image is from the Stampsmith's Lucy plate. I just had to do this one for my girlfriend. Lucy is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock, coloured with water based markers and chalks and mounted on a textured paper. The word phrases were done using green vellum in a dymo label maker.

Friends cards

Both of these Stampsmith images make great cards for those special girlfriends. The backgrounds on both cards use a variation of Tim Holtz's compressed air and alcohol ink backgrounds. I used Copic marker refills and the airbrush in my version. It is great fun and you never know exactly what you are going to get.

This stamp comes as a single in this size and there is also a smaller version. It is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock and coloured with waterbased markers applied with a paintbrush and with chalks. I outlined both the main image layer and the background one with copic markers. The embossed lines on the bottom of the card were done with a Scor-it and then accented with distress inks. I used a label maker for the phrase.

This stamp comes from the Those were the Days plate. It is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock, and coloured with waterbased markers and chalks. The blue layer is distressed and edged with distress inks. The label is made with green vellum run through a dymo label maker.

New silver clay pendants

I had this wonderful vision of how I could use these Fred Mullett stamps to make a underwater scene. I stamped into the metal clay and then trimmed around the stamps. I did a second layer on the big fish to make him more dimensional. The seaweed leaves form the base and the bail. I used liver of sulfur for the patina. I am pleased with the final product but really have to learn how to plan better. I did a lot more playing around and redoing things than was probably best for the clay. Hopefully the attachments are secure enough. I think learning how to rivet should be on my to do list. Although it isn't perfect, it was a great learning experience.

This pendant was based on one in Hadar Jacobson's book. Here again, I ran into some construction problems. I made the mistake of using a little too much water while it was on a playing card during construction. Some must have seeped underneath the pendant and when it was drying, some of the card stuck to the bottom of the pendant. The stuck on bits got burnt off in the kiln but it was a pain to try and peel the pendant off the card without damaging it too much. Another learning experience ( sigh) . It also has a liver of sulfur patina.

Child's Birthday Card

My granddaughter just turned two and she is an enormous fan of Elmo. So her birthday card had to feature the furry red guy. I used my Klik N Kut electronic diecutter to cut out the character and the words. I shaded the character using Art Stix and stamped red and green dots on the yellow birthday word. I used distress inks to outline the word shadow and the card itself. It was a real hit with my granddaughter.

The Joy of Making

This card was inspired by a discussion on one of the groups I belong to. So many very talented and creative people have been made to feel second rate and that their work is somehow inferior by unkind comments or by the arbitrary use of labels. One of the group's members signs his name as Owen, Maker of Small Things. When asked about his signature line, he explained that it came out a discussion he had with a friend after a recognized person in his art world told him that he should not consider himself an artist, that he was an illustrator. "But a friend of mine in Wichita, KS gave me a hug, a smile, and some words of wisdom:"Hon, you're a Maker. You make things. It's other people that make them Art." Owen went on to say "She's a Maker, too. She has almost no money at all, so she makes beautiful things out of nearly nothing. Paper, glue, paint and Love. Twigs, autumn leaves, wire and dried flowers from her garden. Cast-offs no one else wants, she turns into beautiful things. She sends me drawings and brightens my world. She makes me proud to be a Maker.
Bottom line: I'm a Maker. I have a driving need to believe, to create, to do. I'll try anything. Who knows where it will lead?"

Card Details: The main image is from the Ooh Baby plate from The Stampsmith. It is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock and coloured with waterbased markers applied with a paint brush. The spin art background is made with acrylic paints , cut out with a Spellbinders die and edged with a Krylon gold pen. Dragonfly pendant

This layered art clay silver pendant was made using molds made from buttons. The buttons are reproductions of antique ones and have marvelous details. I used Ranger Mold n Pour, a 2 part silcone mold material, to make the molds. This was my first time using my new kiln and after the almost instant gratification of torch firing, I found that I had to exercise some patience, waiting for the complete firing time. But I am pleased with the way this turned out. The pendant was antiqued using liver of sulphur. I still have difficulty in getting good photos of the silver, I will have to keep working at it.

Another spring card

This spring card features one of the Flapper images from Estelle, the Stampsmith. She is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock, and coloured with chalks and watercolour markers used as paint. The flourish from Inque Boutique was stamped onto the background paper with grey Memento ink. The green panel was embossed with a cuttlebug folder. Distress inks were used to edge the card and to make the embossing pop. A pink ribbon and brad finish the card. I love the soft effect the greens and pinks give this card.

Spring has finally arrived here after a couple of false starts. This image always speaks to me of early spring when the fruit trees start to bloom. She is from the Le Jardin plate at Oxford Impressions and all the background stamps are from the French Script plate. She is stamped in Memories black on glossy cardstock, and coloured using water based markers as paint and chalks. The background was done with various colours of Ranger distress ink and London Fog Memento ink on a matte coated cardstock.

Suzanne at Oxford Impressions has a new plate of script and background images called French Script. I paired these images with some from one of my favourite Oxford Impressions plates called China dolls. In this one, I used the acrylic paint resist technique that Tim Holtz has on his site. I used a gold acrylic paint dabber for the resist and various distress inks to complete the background. The girl is stamped with Memories black on glossy cardstock and coloured with water based markers applied with a paint brush and with chalks.

This image uses distress inks for the background on matte coated card stock and the background image from Oxford Impressions is stamped with Memento Cocoa. The girl is stamped with Memories black on glossy and coloured with markers used as paint and chalk.

Splatter cards

Tim Holtz has posted some technique videos on his website, which are great fun. In one, he uses canned air to move the new Ranger alcohol inks on glossy card to make really interesting backgrounds. These are a couple of my experiments in this technique. I used the original colours, as I don't yet have any of the newer ones and used my Copic airbrush and compressor to move the ink.

In the next one, I used the Copic colourless blender and spritzed the background to get the mottled effect.

Cupcake fairy

This card uses stamps from Oxford Impressions. The fairy is stamped in Memento black and is coloured with Copics. The background label was cut using a Spellbinder's die, stamped with the text stamp and airbrushed with Copics. The cupcake icing was made with puffy glue and highlighted with marker. The ribbon is made from various paper scraps.

This is my latest attempt with the Art Clay Silver. I had tried using some molds I made of some Tim Holtz gears. But using them with the ACS did not turn out as I expected as I kept breaking them during greenware sanding. They ended up quite rough looking, with all the paste repairs. So I decided to make a virtue of the rough look, made them even rougher looking and antiqued them with liver of sulphur. It wasn't what I originally intended but it didn't turn out too badly.

Do you believe in fairies?

One of the quote phrases on Oxford Impressions' Fairy Sweets plate was the inspiration for this card. When I read the phrase "do you believe in fairies?", a picture in my mind formed of the old butterfly exhibits you used to see in science centres. Using stamps from her Field Notes plate as well, this is my version of those displays. The fairy children are stamped in Memento Black on white cardstock from the Paper Temptress and coloured with Copic markers. After cutting them out, I aged them with antique linen distress ink. The "case" is made with parchment cardstock from the Paper Temptress, scored with the Scor-it, and distressed with tea dye distress ink. The phrases are stamped with memento ink and the whole thing mounted on black cardstock.

Pensive fairy

I am sorry that I have been missing in action for a while. We went south for a vacation after the holidays and my muse decided to take an extended vacation on the beach. I only wish I could have stayed there with her. It has been really cold, with lots of snow this winter. That said, today it is wet and raining but is supposed to snow later.

This lovely fairy image is from Oxford Impressions. When I first saw her, she called to mind the poem about the first star. She is stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and coloured with Copic markers. She was masked then the background was airbrushed with the Copics. I tried a new cardstock called Heavenly White Premier Ultrasmooth from the Paper Temptress for the stamping and colouring with the Copics and was really pleased with the results. The stars are embossed in gold on a gold paper from Patricia as well. The phrase is computer generated.

This second version of the same stamp shows how very different she can appear with different colour choices. The image is stamped with Memento Rich Cocoa and coloured and airbrushed with the Copics in much warmer tones. The flowers are from Prima. Can you tell that I am so ready for Spring?

Making your own masks

This card uses some techniques that Tim Holtz used in his latest 12 tags of Christmas, posted to his blog. I have made quite a few of these, with different card bases. If I were doing one special card, particularly if it didn't need to be mailed, I would have also added additional embellishments.

Instead of using one of his masks, I made my own using my Klik n Kut digital cutter. I cut the snowflakes out of clear contact paper. The background was created by smooshing broken china and weathered wood distress inks on a craft sheet, then smooshing the cardstock into the ink. I ironed the cardstock to dry it. I applied my snowflake masks and sponged on faded jeans distress ink over the masked area. Because the contact paper was clear, I could see how much in I needed to apply to get the effect I wanted. The word stamp is embossed in black and the card front mounted on a silver cardstock layer, then onto the pale blue card base. The card is a little hard to photograph because both the embossing and the silver background layer wanted to reflect the light. In real life the black is darker and more intense.

Although I used my cutter for the images, you could cut them out with scissors. You do have to be careful weeding out the waste contact vinyl and I did stick my masks carefully onto my jeans at least 3 times to remove some of the tackiness so that it wouldn't tear my cardstock when I removed them. These are not as substantial as the purchased masks but I really liked being able to use the design that I wanted, and in the size I needed for the card.

A masculine Santa card

I apologize for the fact that this photo is a little out of focus. I took it quickly right before I gave it to the recipient and obviously my camera settings were a bit off. Hopefully it is good enough for you to get the idea.

This card was done for my son-in-law and is my attempt at a masculine card. I used my Wizard and some cuttlebug folders to texture the cardstock. This is my take on a technique that Annette showed on her blog here. I used gel medium to glue the sections together and Golden fluid acrylic paints to colour the background. I really like the almost leathery texture that these paints give to cardstock.

The Santa face was stamped on tissue paper and adhered to the background with gel medium. It was painted with some glaze lightly tinted with raw umber to give a more antique feel and a gold Adrirondack dabber was used to add metallic accents. The lettering was done with a dymo labeller. I used aged copper brads and turners as embellishments.

Card for my granddaughter

My granddaughter absolutely loves this furry red guy, so this card is specially for her. I cut him out on my Klik n Kut, and used Prismacolor Art Stix to colour and shade him for depth. The wings were cut on gold cardstock using a Spellbinders die in my Wizard. Most of this card uses leftover materials. The oval window card was a leftover piece of cardstock from another card that used the spellbinders ovals as a backing, the greeting was one that did not work on another card, the ribbon was a scrap. I am trying to challenge myself to use up more of my bits and pieces.

Poinsettia necklace

I had so much fun playing with the calla lilies, I thought I would tackle a poinsettia. I chose to make the poinsettia a burgundy shade, as I thought it would be more versatile than red. I used Premo for this and embedded Swarovski pearls in the center, using eye pins. For some reason, this particular colour, which is a creamy white, turns golden in the oven and I thought they would be pretty for the center of the poinsettia. I chose not to apply a finish so that the poinsettia retained the matte, velvet look that is more realistic and so that I did not lose the soft sparkle that came from adding red pearl to the colour mix.

More calla lilies

I had so much fun playing with the original polymer clay version of the lilies and my metal clay interpretation, that I decided to try and make them smaller and a little finer detailed in the polymer clay. I also made some polymer clay beads in colours to match and I am pleased with their effect in the necklaces. (The original instructions for the calla lilies are found in an article by Christi Friesen in Bead and Button magazine 15th anniversary issue.)

Calla lilies pendants

Christi Friesen had an article in the 15th Anniversary issue of Bead and Button magazine that showed how to do a calla lilly pin or pendant out of polymer clay. I decided to try it. Unfortunately mine got a spotted effect, perhaps from overcooking, or some clay contamination, but I think I like the effect. I was curious to see how it would look, modified, in Art Clay Silver.

This is much more delicate. I am still in the phase where working with the metal clay feels like magic.

I thought I would post a couple of cards that I did for Suzanne , using her new plates for Halloween- Trick or Treat and Wicked. The main images were stamped with Memento ink, which is becoming my favourite for images stamped on matte cardstock. The images were coloured with Copic markers and some parts highlighted with the Inkssentials white pen. The background on the skeleton card was done with various distress inks. Hope you enjoy them.

A happy accident

This was one of those cards that came out of an unplanned effect. I was using some Adirondack Color Washes to make a background and one of the spray nozzles was clogged so I got big drops instead of the spray I was expecting. I tilted the cardstock to make the drops run down the paper.
I think it ended up as an effective background for some of Suzanne's new Halloween images, found Here . I highlighted the eyes with the Ranger Inkssentials white pen.

Card for wedding

This card uses the same basic format and papers as the one that I did for my brother's wedding, but the feel is very different with the darker main colour choice. The bride and groom are Chinese, so I used a much stronger colour. The burgundy is the same colour as their wedding invites and the dresses of the bridemaids. The words were done on my KNK with a papermate erasable pen and embossed with gold detail powder.

I have been playing again with the Art Clay Silver. This stuff is so much fun, but I am learning some important things in the process. I really do have to plan things better and remember that there is a lot of finishing that can be done after the drying and before the firing. I keep trying to get it perfect at the initial stage and tend to overwork it. And much as I hate to admit it, I really should either sketch or do a mock up in polymer clay first to get better results. I also have to learn how to take better photos as taking pictures of the silver has been a challenge. Having said all of that, I am having great fun with this product.

ACS Pendant

I have been wanting to try Art Clay Silver for a while and when my local supplier had a 20% off sale, I figured it was time. This pendant is my very first attempt. I used the ACS650 slow dry version and torch fired with a butane torch. For those who have used polymer clay, the time you have to play with this is deceptively short. I found that the expression slow dry is relative - the small bits started to dry really quickly. It made me really grateful that I did not purchase the regular formula. Although there are things I would do differently the next time, I was relatively pleased with the result. I used a rubber stamp for the texture and a cubic zirconium stone.

(I apologize for the quality of the photo. I found this really hard to photograph well, because of the reflection. )

Simple airbrushed card

I made this card for a friend's birthday. This is a really easy, fast card but I love the look. I used a cuttlebug folder for the texture, then airbrushed using a green Copic marker. The tag was die cut using a Wizard die, the phrase stamped, then I put the die cut back in the die and airbrushed using the same marker. I used a little antique linen distress ink to age the tag and some silk ribbon to attach it to the card.

Using a new toy

Sorry I haven't blogged for a while. I have a nasty habit of forgetting to photograph a lot of my cards before they go to the intended recipient. I will try and do better in the future. This card uses the Copic markers. I have had the markers for a while, and just purchased the air brush system. The image is stamped with Memento ink, coloured with Copic markers, masked using Eclipse tape, then I airbrushed the background. I like the way this turned out and this stamp always makes me smile.

Altered switch plate

We recently repainted our kitchen and wanted new switch plates for the room. I couldn't find one in this configuration that matched the other new ones we purchased, so decided to dress up a plain beige plastic one. I remembered seeing a mini tutorial or Inkling for this on the yahoo group rangerinklink posted by Yevette. The very plain plastic cover is coloured with Ranger alcohol inks, then has the mesh image stamped multiple times with Versamark ink, then embossed with black detail embossing powders. I inked the edges with the Versamark and embossed them with the black to finish the look. I coloured the screws with a black sharpie to match.

( I should probably have scraped the old paint off the existing socket before I put my plate up, but didn't realize the necessity until I saw it in the picture. lol)

Wedding card

Sometimes the simplest things work the best. This card is for my brother's wedding. His fiance loves pink so that determined the colour choices here. The paper was textured in a cuttlebug folder, using my wizard, and the dots and birds highlighted with Lumieres paint. The lettering was done on my KNK using an erasable papermate pen, then embossed with gold embossing powder. I used an oval scallop nestabilities die to cut out the medallion and inked the edges with distress ink.

Polymer dragon

Along with my cardmaking, I also dabble a bit with polymer clay. This is my first attempt at a Christi Friesen type dragon. http://www.cforiginals.net/ Probably because of the heat and humidity, I found the clay softened a lot and became more pliable than I would have liked. He ended up more alligator looking than I originally intended, but still usable. It has made me aware to really watch the positioning of the eyes when sculpting the clay.

This journal was made for my brother's fiance. It also uses the metallic heating and air conditioning tape. The die cut was done on my KNK. The tape was textured with Ten Seconds Studio's tools and antiqued with acrylic paint. It was a little hard to photograph, without getting too much reflection, and has a much shinier appearance in real life.

Metallic textures

I created this card a couple of months ago for Suzanne at Oxford Impressions and it uses one of the images from the Country Girl plate. I thought I would share it here as it uses an easily found item to create a metallic textured look that is easy to do and light weight enough to be used on a card that could be mailed. The letters were cut out of card stock on my KNK and adhered to a card stock base. ( Any die cut letters or shapes could be used.) These were then covered with a strip of shiny heating/air conditioning tape that you can get at Home Depot, or other home improvement store or sometimes at your local dollar store. I brayered the tape with a soft rubber brayer and outlined the letters with a paper stump. (This is an adaptation of a technique that Tim Holtz used on one of his DVD's, and of techniques from Ten Seconds Studio.) I textured several pieces of the tape with Ten Seconds Studio's metal tools and applied them to the base. Acrylic paint was used to give the tape an antique appearance. The image is stamped on glossy card stock and coloured with markers (applied with a paint brush), chalk and distress ink. Screw brads compliment the metal frame. This technique is a great way to get wonderful metal effects without the extra weight of actual metal.

Smoosh background cards

A while ago, I had been playing with the Memories Mists as backgrounds, as shown in Elaine Barr's blog here The backgrounds involve 2 pieces of glossy card stock, sprayed heavily with the Memories mist, smooshed together, then pulled apart. This gives some really interesting effects as shown in Elaine's blog. I took it one step further and while the pieces were still really wet, touched certain spots together and it gave me an encaustic wax effect.

These made such interesting backgrounds that I was reluctant to cover them up, so they sat unused. Today, I wondered what they would be like as backgrounds for very nostalgic images, instead of the strong graphic images you would expect to use with them.

This card uses an image from Paperbag Studios as the focus.

I hope you enjoyed the cards and will give the technique a try. It is loads of fun, but be warned- wear old clothes as it can be a little messy.

Faux Tortoiseshell Frames

Using some of the Walnut Ink Tintz and clear embossing powder, I found a way to make it look like Faux Tortoiseshell. I dabbed on the rust and walnut colours randomly, some lighter, some darker. I applied versamark over the entire thing, and embossed with clear embossing powder. This made the colours really pop and gave it the faux tortoiseshell effect.

As a craft supplies collector, I also have 2 electronic die cut machines- a Craft Robo and a KNK Element. Since acquiring the KNK, my CR doesn't see much action. This card is from a file shared on UKScrappers by AndiDee. It is a complex file but cuts very well. I converted it to use in the KNK cutter. Various types of ink were used to highlight the individual animals.

Playing with textures

Suzanne at Oxford Impressions had sent me some wonderful new images to play with and I thought they would be perfect to use with a technique I saw on Annette's blog. http://goannafive.blogspot.com/ . My version of the technique uses torn pieces of cardstock that have been run through the cuttlebug folders to get the texture, glued to a base, then painted to pull it all together. I love the textural effect and the masculine feel that I was able to get.

Supplies used- Oxford Impressions rubber stamps, Cuttlebug Folders, Wizard, Golden acrylics and glazes, gel medium, gold adirondack paint dabber.
